The
Changeling
By Selma Lagerlöf
A production that came to me during a figure theater festival abroad.
Many of the performances were based on text. Another language, a
language that I don’t master. In some way I was excluded from
the audience which experienced and laughed without me understanding
why. .

"At the sewing-machine"
I sat as a passive onlooker and felt increasingly left out. At
that point I got the idea of making a performance without words
that deals with the difficulties of communicating when you don’t
speak the same language, given a situation where one desires to
talk about something very important.
The Changeling by Selma Lagerlöf is important. It is about
respect for the living, about us having to fight for the defenseless
and about taking care of those who need caring.
I want to tell it to you even if you don’t understand what
I am saying. A performance that I have elaborated for an audience
which does not share the language of my figure in the performance.
A new performance that builds on physical communication without
an explanatory language.
This will take 40 minutes of our lives. I hope that these minutes
will change us.
Somewhere in the world sits a functionary in his office. Suddenly
refugees fill his office. They come from somewhere and want to go
somewhere else.

"They have arrived now"
Away from repression, poverty, and war.
While they are waiting for a decision from the functionary’s
superiors they wait.

"The Changeling by Selma Lagerlöf"
To pass time the functionary tells the story about the Changeling
and the woman who got her child exchanged.

"The man and the woman look for their son"
The functionary attempts to make himself understood but the refugees
come from far away.
They don’t understand what he is saying, they understand what
he means.

I play MacBeth as figure theater. A performance that I have played
during more than 16 years. A cult performance which many people
have seen over 5 times (I have performed it during 5 years at the
Figure Theater Festival in Kristiansand). A performance that you
want to see 5 times has to be something special…
